Missy Elliott has *a lot* of classic songs, but one of them has been named the greatest hit of the century.
On Wednesday, October 8, Rolling Stone released its list of the 250 Greatest Songs of the 21st Century (so far). The list is comprised of 250 incredible songs from the past 25 years that have made an impact on pop culture, including Tweet's "Oops (Oh My)," Post Malone & Swae Lee's "Sunflower," DaVido's "Unavailable," and Scarface's "My Block." Coming in at No. 1 is Missy Elliott's 2001 hit "Get Ur Freak On" produced by Timbaland.
"That's amazing," Missy Elliott said when she learned about the honor. "I'm super excited and thankful that after all these years that it could be at the top of y'all list."
"Get Ur Freak On" was the lead single from her 2001 album Miss E... So Addictive. The song landed in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained there for several weeks. The song re-entered the charts after she performed it at the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show in 2015. During her interview on Rolling Stone Music Now, Eliott explained that "Get Ur Freak On" was actually the last song she and Timbaland made for her third studio album.
"He just started hitting anything,” she said. “He was bamming on the keyboard ’cause he was ready to go. And he hit something and I was like, ‘That’s it right there.’ And he was like, ‘What? What you talking about?’ I just went in the booth and did the record.”
In addition, Missy Elliott also revealed that she's working on new music and hopes to go back on tour in the new year. It'll be the first time she's released something new since her 2019 EP Iconology.
“I have something in the works,” Missy said. “It’s just different. It’s me being experimental again… I got some stuff coming. Some fire.”
